Story:

Fontana, California (San Bernardino County) Police Department An Elderly woman who suffers from Alzheimer’s went missing in Fontana on May 5, 2010. Communications Supervisor Hostetter contacted A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program- which they had also successfully done just one month prior. This time more than 5,000 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the Bonnie Lane address where the woman had last been seen. One of the recipients of the alert call was a neighbor who found the woman in her backyard. Upon finding the woman, the neighbor notified Police, who returned the woman safe to her family. The total time from activation to safe assisted recovery was 46 minutes, preserving law enforcement time and resources.

Fontana, California (San Bernardino County) Police Department On Tuesday, April 6, 2010, Communications Supervisor Wendy Hostetter activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist in her agency’s search for a 7 year old girl. The mother of the missing girl had picked the girl up from school and family members were concerned about the mother’s state of mind and had expressed concern about the child’s safety. Approximately 3,000 alert calls were placed around the school, and in response to those alert calls, a citizen called in stating he had seen the two walking nearby. An officer responded and located both mother and child safe one and a half miles from the school.

San Bernardino County, California Sheriff’s Office A 49 year old man thought to be a danger to himself was reported missing to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office on January 15, 2010. Sergeant Doug Wolfe activated the A Child is Missing Alert and over 4,400 alert calls were placed in near the 400 block of East Elysian Boulevard, where the man was last seen. Approximately 20 calls with information were generated, enabling Police to locate the man safe hiding in nearby woods, about a block from where he had gone missing.

San Bernardino County, California Sheriff’s Office The San Bernardino County, California Sheriff’s Office activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program on November 9, 2009 when it was searching for a 79 year old woman, possibly in need of medical attention, who had gone missing. She had last been seen that morning at 10:00 in the area of the 18000 block of Alder Street in Hesperia, California and Police were concerned about her safety. A Child Is Missing quickly launched more than 1,500 alert calls which “generated the neighborhood to come out of their houses to look,” said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Sergeant Colleen Kuhn. The Sheriff’s Office received six to seven calls from the community as a result of the alert calls and, shortly after, the woman was found safe three miles away.

Pasadena, California (Los Angeles County) Police Department “Your service resulted directly in case closure,” said Pasadena, California Police about the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. This came after more than 2,700 alert calls were placed on the agency’s behalf by A Child Is Missing to assist the Pasadena Police search for a 76 year old man thought to be in need of medical attention. He had been missing for four days having last been seen on September 15, 2009 in the area of the 1700 block of Newport Avenue in Pasadena. A short time after the alert calls were placed, the man was located safe.

Victorville, California (San Bernardino County) Police Department June 6, 2009; Victorville Police activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program when they responded to a case involving a missing six year old boy, He had gone missing at approximately 3:00pm from the 15000 block of Topango Road in Victorville and was missing for several hours. Approximately 2,400 alert phone calls were placed in the area surrounding the Topango Road location and six people called Victorville Police with information. In addition to that assistance, several residents who received the alert call helped Police distribute flyers and search for the boy according to Police. Ultimately he was found safe at 7:00pm 1/5 mile from where he had gone missing.

The Fresno, California Police Department began a search for a missing 76 year old man with Alzheimer’s in the early morning hours of May 6, 2009. The information regarding the missing man was taken by a Recovery Specialist for A Child Is Missing and the alert calls were held and placed at 7:00am to ensure maximum effectiveness. With more than 2,100 alert calls placed, approximately 15 calls from the public with information were generated. This information was ultimately responsible for Fresno Police locating the man at the Millerton Lake Ranger Station—some 20 miles from the 9300 block of North Blackstone Avenue where he had last been seen.

On June 25, 2007 a 15 year old boy was missing from the 9400 block of Tuscany Circle in Stockton, California. Stockton Police Sergeant Kamigaki activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program and more than 3,000 alert calls were launched to assist the Stockton Police Search. Two calls with information from the public were enough to provide sufficient information to Police to enable the boys safe recovery.

At 3:15pm on May 15, 2007, a 71 year old woman went missing from the 9400 block of Cody Way in Stockton, California and the Stockton Police were called. To help the agency’s search for the woman, Officer Russ Thurman called A Child Is Missing and requested activation of the Alert Program. This resulted in more than 1,500 alert calls being placed to the area near where the woman had last been seen. As a result, the woman was safely located five blocks from her home.

As a result, the woman was safely located.

Stockton, CA – On December 2, 2006, a 14-year-old juvenile was reported missing by the Port of Stockton Police Department. Communications Officer Jonathan Swain contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a complete description and last seen location of the missing person. Within minutes over 1700 residences and business in the area were notified. Stockton Police received a call from Holiday Cinema that resulted in recovery of the missing juvenile. Officer Enebrad, of the Missing Persons Division, stated “Holiday Cinema received the alert – missing juvenile was recognized by employees after the telephone alert –Good Job.”

South Lake Tahoe, CA – On November 19, 2006, a twenty five year old at risk brain injured male went missing from his residence in South Lake Tahoe (El Dorado County), CA. Communications Officer Leona and Officer Martinez of the South Lake PD contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a complete description of the missing person. Over 639 residences and businesses in the area were notified. Officer Martinez was quoted as saying “The missing person – an at risk brain injured adult – was reported missing at 0930 hours. Our request to A Child is Missing occurred at 1015 hours, and the calls were confirmed at 1038 hours. The subject was located at 1058 hours by a resident who had received the call and was out looking. Thank you.”

Story:

Stockton, CA – On April 21, 2006, a six-year-old girl went missing from her residence in Stockton (San Joaquin County) CA. Officer Keo of the Stockton PD contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a complete description of the missing girl to be used as part of the neighborhood notification alert. A Child Is Missing notified over 1600 residences and businesses in the area. One of the call recipients had found the child earlier and brought her to Community Services. When they received the alert call, they connected the description of the girl to the one they had brought in earlier, and notified the appropriate authorities. Officer Keo was quoted as saying “Good work, this is a good program.”
