Jones County, Georgia Sheriff’s Office On Tuesday, June 22, 2010, Major Burnett notified the A Child Is Missing Alert of an autistic 30 year old man who had gone missing from a group home in Gray at 4pm. Because the area is very rural, only 222 alert calls were placed, covering a 10 mile radius. That was enough to reach the citizen that had given the man a ride. The alert system had called the citizen, but because he was not home, the system had left a message on his answering service. When he returned home, he heard the message, and immediately called Police. When Police went to the location where the citizen told Police he had dropped off the missing man, they discovered it to be an abandoned house. More alert calls were then placed around the abandoned house. Ultimately, the man was located safe, 30 miles from where he had gone missing.
