Story:

Perry, Iowa (Dallas County) Police Department Monday, September 6, 2010, a call to A Child Is Missing Alert ended an exhaustive search for law enforcement officers. A 14 year old girl had run away the evening of September 3rd and Officers were concerned for her safety. More than 3,800 alert calls were placed surrounding the girl’s residence, asking anyone with information to contact Police. In response, more than 15 calls with information came in. Residents who had seen the girl provided numerous tips, and within two hours of the alert calls being placed, Police located the girl safe, approximately 2 miles from where she had gone missing.

Story:

Iowa Falls, Iowa (Hardin County) Police Department May 27, 2010, an 8 year old boy was last seen riding away on his sister’s 10 speed bicycle. After not being able to locate the boy, his mother contacted the Iowa Falls Police Department and reported him missing. Authorities wasted no time in activating A Child Is Missing Alert to assist in the safe recovery of the child. Less than 30 minutes after calls went out, a woman contacted the police and notified them that the missing boy was at her house, approximately 2 miles from his last seen address. The woman and her husband had observed the boy heading down a path to get to a dam. The area below the dam has steep cliffs and fast turning water. Upon receiving the alert call, the couple followed the child and retrieved him, possibly averting a tragedy.

Story:

When a non-custodial mother abducted her one year old daughter, The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office activated A Child is Missing Alert. More than 3,300 alert calls were placed around the 100 block of Hall Street, where the child was last seen. As a result of those alert calls, the Sheriff’s office received 20 phone calls with information, enabling them to locate the child safe and sound.

Story:

Marshalltown, Iowa (Marshall County) Police Department On January 14, 2010, two brothers ran away from their mother at the local elementary school, one of whom has autism. Police began the search by activating A Child is Missing Alert and nearly 1700 alert calls with the boys’ description were placed surrounding the school. Fifteen alert call recipients contacted Marshalltown Police including two callers who had spotted the boys. As a result, Police located the boys safe at 8pm some eight tenths of a mile from the school.

Story:

Iowa Falls, Iowa (Hardin County) Police Department An 81 year old woman in need of medical attention had gone missing from the 100 block of Rocksylvania Avenue in Iowa City, Iowa at approximately 8:15am on Friday, December 11, 2009. Iowa Falls Police called A Child Is Missing and, while activating the Alert Program, made cell phone contact with the woman. When the woman hung up and Police were unable to verify her location, A Child Is Missing launched more than 1,300 alert calls to the area surrounding where the woman was thought to be. As a result of those alert calls, Police received 15 calls from the public with information that did lead to the woman’s whereabouts. Ultimately she was located at 9:16am approximately ¼ mile from where she had last been seen.

Maquoketa, Iowa (Jackson County) Police Department The Maquoketa, Iowa Police Department contacted the A Child Is Missing Alert Program on September 10, 2009 as they were searching for a 13 year old boy who had gone missing from the 200 block of North Olive Street in Maquoketa that morning. After nearly 1,800 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the boy had last been seen, 15-20 calls with information were placed by area residents to Maquoketa Police. Information from those calls enabled Police to safely located the boy walking near a park approximately two miles from where he had gone missing.

Marshalltown, Iowa (Marshall County) Police Department When a five year old boy went missing in Marshalltown, Iowa, “the child was located by a citizen in the area who had received an alert call,” said Teresa Lang, Marshalltown Police Communications Supervisor. The boy had been reported missing from the area of 1st Street and Madison Street in Marshalltown on September 3, 2009—having last been seen at approximately 4:00pm. Officer Todd Tuttle was working the case and quickly ensured A Child Is Missing was notified. More than 1,800 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the boy had last been seen and within minutes he was located safely.

Ottumwa, Iowa (Wapello County) Police Department Two children, a six year old boy and a seven year old boy, went missing in Ottumwa, Iowa and Ottumwa Police Sergeant Chad Farrington activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program to assist his agency’s search for them. The boys were believed to be missing together and had last been seen at Union Park at 11:30am on July 25, 2009. After more than 1,700 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the park, Ottumwa Police received a single call—from a woman who had found the boys. A “resident heard your message,” said Sergeant Farrington, she “left her house and saw both children and matched [their] description perfectly.”

Norwalk, Iowa (Warren County) Police Department An 11 year old boy went missing from the 200 block of Spruce Avenue in Norwalk, Iowa on May 30, 2009 and Norwalk Police began a search. After activating the A Child Is Missing Alert Program, approximately 1,300 alert calls were placed to the search area. Once of those calls was received by a woman who, in turn, called Norwalk Police. “The caller was receiving the [A Child Is Missing] message while she watched the boy out her window,” said a Norwalk Police official. The information she provided enabled Norwalk Police to locate the boy safe ½ mile from where he had gone missing.

“First time we have had to use [the Alert] Program, “said Camanche, Iowa Assistant Police Chief Bill Lodge after activating A Child Is Missing on the morning of May 16, 2009 regarding a 10 year old boy who had gone missing. The boy had last been seen on a bicycle in the 1600 block of 8th Street in Camanche and was thought to be in need of medical attention. As a result of 3,600 alert calls being placed to the area, more than 10 calls with information were received by Police leading to the boy’s whereabouts. “What an awesome program,” Lodge said, “highly recommended.”

“Great system—thanks for your help,” said Sheriff Dean Kruger of Humboldt County, Iowa of the A Child Is Missing Alert Program after its activation led to the safe locating of a 15 year old boy who had gone missing in that county on May 11, 2009. Humboldt County Deputy Tim Fisher activated the Alert Program after the boy was reported missing from the 400 block of South Taft Street in Humboldt, Iowa at 8:15am that day. More than 2,000 alert calls were placed to the area being searched and approximately 30 calls with information from the public were generated as a result. Information from those calls led Deputies to the boy’s location and, ultimately, his being reunited with his family.

On the morning of November 21, 2008, the Des Moines, Iowa Police Department located a child approximately three years of age and began a search for the child’s family. To assist the search, Des Moines Police phoned A Child Is Missing which placed more than 3,500 alert calls. The alert message described the girl, her clothing, and her approximately and asked that anyone with knowledge of the girl or her family call Police. One of the alert calls was received by a woman who helped the girl’s family when they first came to the United States. The woman recognized the girl’s first name which Police were able to ascertain and the girl was reunited with her family.

Story:

A three year old boy went missing in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, July 4, 2008 at approximately 7:30am and Des Moines Police Sergeant Heller called A Child Is Missing. The child was located just 10 minutes after the alert calls were launched in the area surrounding the 900 block of 31st Street in Des Moines. “A great tool,” Sergeant Heller said, “the volume of calls put out in the short time was great.” The boy had been located on 31st Street at the I-235 overpass—approximately three blocks from his aunt’s home.

The “child was located about 20 minutes after the call went out… Great system, will use it again if needed… Easy to use,” were the comments about the A Child Is Missing Alert Program from Sheriff Dean Kruger of Humboldt County, Iowa. This after his agency activated the Alert Program in search of a 16 year old girl who had gone missing from Livermore, Iowa on May 24, 2008. In this rural area, less than 1,000 alert calls were launched resulting in approximately 12 calls with information to the Sheriff’s Office. This information led deputies to the missing girl who was safely reunited with her family.

Story:

Cedar Falls, IA (Black Hawk County) – A ten year old child went missing on August 5, 2007 at 8:00 a.m. The University of Northern Iowa PD contacted A Child Is Missing for help. Utilizing satellite mapping, nearly 1300 Alert Calls were launched. The child was located the following day just outside “Happy Joes” when accurate tips were received as to the general location he had been seen walking.

Missing Child - Recovered: Friday, June 08, 2007

Story:

Montezuma, IA (Poweshiek) – The Poweshiek County, Iowa Sheriff’s Office had not activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program prior to June 8, 2007. However, at 10:00am on that day two children went missing from Montezuma, Iowa and they quickly called A Child Is Missing to use the Alert Program for the first time. Within 15 minutes after calling A Child Is Missing, Poweshiek County Deputies responded to a call from someone who had received the alert call and saw both children in a trailer. The children were safe and reunited with their parents.

Story:

Maquoketa, IA – On Friday, October 6, 2006, the Maquoketa Police Department began a search for a pair of young boys who had run away from their homes—a search that ended with a response to one of the hundreds of automated phone calls that had been placed to the area adjacent to his home by the A Child Is Missing alert program. Upon taking the report, Chief Brad Koranda called the toll free number for the A Child Is Missing alert program, provided key information to the technician, and, shortly after, the region where they was last seen area was ringing with calls requesting those in the area to check their yards and complexes for the missing children. Police received approximately thirty calls including one from a neighbor who spotted the boys running through the backyards of her neighborhood. The recovered boys were reunited with their parents within thirty minutes of them being reported to ACIM. In a letter from the Maquoketa Police Department, they were quoted as saying: “A Child Is Missing was very useful and it did result in finding the two boys”.
