Story:

Kendall County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office On Saturday, July 10, 2010, Deputy Brautigam was working a case involving a 16 year old boy that had run away the previous evening. Also heightening the sense of urgency was that the boy was believed be carrying a gun and suffering from a disorder that could cause him to be a danger to himself or others. Deputy Brautigam activated A Child Is Missing Alert, as his agency had done with successful results twice before. The boy had run away before, and managed to travel long distances so a large calling area was used and more than 2,800 alert calls were placed to the Newark address where he was last seen. In response a resident who knew the boy’s location responded, and the boy was located safe, 1.5 miles from where he had gone missing.

Elderly - Recovered: Friday, June 11, 2010

Story:

Lansing, Illinois (Cook County) Police Department On Friday, June 11, 2010, Officer Bell responded to a call involving an 84 year old man suffering from dementia that had been missing for several hours. He quickly activated the A Child Is Missing Alert and more than 4,000 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the Waterford Drive address where the man had last been seen. A resident 2 miles away, having received the alert call, advised Police that they believed the missing man was in front of their house. Police arrived and determined that it was in fact the missing man, and he was returned safe to the custody of his wife.

Story:

Dwight, Illinois (Livingston County) Police Department - A fifteen year old girl went missing from the 200 block of Andrew Avenue on Sunday, March 14, 2010, and Detective Gary Beier called A Child Is Missing Alert to assist in his agency’s search. The girl had recently gotten a new cell phone number which Police could not locate. More than 2,500 alert calls were sent out, asking anyone with information to call Police. In response to those calls, Police received 15 calls from residents. One of those calls provided Police with a new cell phone number for the girl, which then allowed them to track the girl’s location. As a result, she was located safe in Mattoon, Illinois, 120 miles from where she had gone missing.

Story:

Ford County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office A family friend, who had received an alert call from A Child Is Missing, of a missing 13 year old boy located the boy along a roadway and called Police. This occurred just before midnight on November 29, 2009 in Melvin, Illinois. The boy had last been seen at approximately 3:30 that afternoon and Police had concern for his safety. After nearly 2,000 alert calls were placed at the request of the Ford County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was safely located.

Story:

South Elgin, Illinois (Kane County) Police Department When an eight year old boy with blonde spiked hair went missing in South Elgin, Illinois in Spiderman swim shorts, the South Elgin Police were charged with locating him. He had last been seen in the 500 block of Lowell Drive in South Elgin around noon on Friday, June 26, 2009. Approximately 400 alert phone calls were placed to the area surrounding that address and one was received by a woman who had information helpful to Police. She went outside and relayed that information to an officer which led South Elgin Police to the boy’s location.

Story:

Ford County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office A 14 year old boy went missing in Paxton, Illinois on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 and the Ford County Sheriff’s Office began a search for him. The boy learned that Police were looking for him from a number of people who had received alert calls placed by A Child Is Missing on behalf of the Ford County Sheriff’s Office. Feeling the pressure from the nearly 4,000 alert calls that were placed in search of him, the boy walked into the Sheriff’s Office himself. This prompted Ford County Sheriff Mark Doran to write: “I would like to thank you and your staff for the response concerning our missing child. Following our call to your agency, we received several return calls to our office concerning the child’s location within the City of Paxton. We had received so many calls that the child himself came to the Sheriff’s Office because he had heard from several people that the Police were looking for him. I can tell you that your system works and is very effective.”

Jo Daviess County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office When a 27 year old suicidal man in need of medical attention went missing in Galena, Illinois, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office contacted A Child Is Missing. Their call activated the Alert Program which placed approximately 400 phone calls to the area surrounding the intersection of U.S. Route 20 West and Norris Lane in Galena. Approximately five to 10 calls from the public with information were received by the Sheriff’s Office and were instrumental in locating the man at a hotel approximately one mile from where he had been last seen.

Story:

When Kendall County, Illinois Sheriff’s Deputies received calls from concerned citizens about odd footprints in the snow—calls generated by the A Child Is Missing alert calls—they thought it might be significant to their search for a 14 year old boy who had gone missing from the 15000 block of Whipple Place in Newark, Illinois at 8:00pm on January 9, 2009. Shortly after he went missing, Deputies Hanks and French contacted A Child Is Missing requesting the assistance of the Alert Program. After more than 3,100 alert calls and numerous foot prints in the snow, the boy was located approximately four miles from where he had last been seen.

Story:

On September 12, 2008, Oswego, Illinois Police received approximately 50 calls from citizens regarding a missing 14 year old girl. These calls were a result of the alert calls placed to the community by A Child Is Missing at the request of Oswego Police Officer Matt Fleming to assist in the search for the girl who had gone missing from the 2900 block of Route 34 in that village. As it turns out, a resident had received the alert call, saw the girl matching the description, and the girl was ultimately reunited with her family.

Henry County, Illinois Deputy Carlton called the A Child Is Missing Alert Program on July 13, 2008 seeking help in locating a disabled woman in need of medical assistance. The Recovery Specialist for A Child Is Missing placed more than 3,000 alert calls in the area surrounding the 8800 block of Gun Club Road in Cambridge, Illinois. Ultimately one of the alert calls reached a resident who had information that led law enforcement to the missing woman along Route 81.

Sherman, Illinois Police Officer Phil Brown notified the A Child Is Missing Alert Program of a missing 79 year old man in need of medical assistance who had wandered away from caretakers in the area of the 900 block of St. Johns Drive in Sherman at 12:00pm on July 7, 2008. After more than 3,500 alert calls were placed to that area, residents were quickly outside talking to law enforcement and volunteering to search for the man. The man was eventually located walking on Interstate 55, one mile from the Sherman exit.

Douglas County, IL - At 1:48am on June 9, 2008, the Douglas County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office called A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program regarding a missing nine year old girl. The girl had last been seen at 6:15 the previous evening. After nearly 2,500 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the intersection of Jackson Avenue and South Elm Street in Villa Grove, the girl was located at 6:30am. A neighbor of the girl’s friend had received an alert call, knew the girl was at her friend’s house, and notified Deputies.

Story:

Kendall County, IL - Numerous phone calls from concerned residents who had been alerted about a missing 10 year old girl by the A Child Is Missing Alert, helped Kendall County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office locate the girl in less than two hours of the alert calls being launched. The girl had gone missing from Knollwood Court in Montgomery at 8:00am on May 28, 2008. Initially, more than 2,000 alert calls were launched and a second wave of calls exceeded 1,000. Ultimately it paid off as the girl was located safe and reunited with her family.

Story:

On Thursday, May 22, 2008 at approximately 4:45am, the Henry County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a missing four year old girl. The Colona, Illinois Police Department responded along with Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Colona Fire Department, and the Geneseo, Illinois Police Department K-9 Unit. A search of the area by police didn’t locate the girl and the A Child Is Missing Alert Program was activated. After nearly 1,000 alert calls were launched, a resident who received an alert call heard a noise and went outside to see what it was. The child was located, police were called, and Colona Fire Department concluded the child had apparently been sleep walking.

When a 12 year old boy went missing from the 500 block of East 1st Street in Kewanee, Illinois at 8:00pm on May 12, 2008, Kewanee Police Sergeant Chris Woods called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program to assist in the search. The boy not only suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder, but was afraid of the dark. After nearly 4,000 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the boy was last seen, one of the numerous calls Kewanee Police received from the public with information led them to the boy at a local department store.

Lake Villa, Illinois (Lake County) Police Department A phone call to Lake Villa, Illinois Police from a citizen who had received an A Child Is Missing alert call was valuable information to police: “Phone call indicated Amanda was accessing her MySpace account and, through the IP address, we were able to find her location in Lindenhurst, Illinois,” said Detective Rochelle Tisinai. This after Police called A Child Is Missing on March 31, 2008 regarding the 16 year old who had gone missing a week-and-a-half earlier.

Story:

Round Lake, IL - Of the more than 1,700 alert phone calls launched by A Child Is Missing on the evening of December 18, 2007 in search of the parent of a four year old girl in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, Round Lake Beach Police received only one response from the public. That response call, however, led police to the parent who was reunited with the child. Round Lake Beach Police Sergeant Callese had activated the A Child Is Missing Alert to assist in the agency’s activity to find the parent.

Batavia, IL (Kane County) – Batavia PD Police Officer Carl Ensign said of the A Child Is Missing (ACIM) Alert Program: “this was our first experience with ACIM and, needless to say, we are pleased and impressed with the results.” This after Officer Ensign called A Child Is Missing shortly after 10:00am on November 23, 2007 seeking assistance in the search for a missing 79 year old man suffering from Alzheimer’s who had last been seen approximately three hours earlier. After alert calls were launched to the area he was last seen, a concerned citizen who received an alert call went out with his children on bicycles searching for the man. Ultimately they found him in a nearby field and he was reunited with his family.

The “individual was located on Route 66, three miles north of Lexington approximately 20 minutes after calling A Child Is Missing,” Police said. This after more than 3,200 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the boy was last seen.

Story:

Lake Villa, IL (Lake County) – A Child Is Missing was contacted on September 24, 2007 at 12:18 p.m. to assist the Lake Villa Police Department in locating a missing 14 year old girl. After being provided all pertinent information, an ACIM technician initiated 841 Alert Calls to area residents and business owners of where the individual was last seen. The Lake Villa PD received 10 call-backs in response, one giving the location of the missing teenager which led police to her safe recovery.

South Elgin, IL (Kane County) - Officer Pat Krug of the South Elgin Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing at 9:55 a.m. on September 11, 2007 to report a missing four year child. After a technician at A Child Is Missing launched 1100 Alert Calls, at least 30 calls were received back from concerned citizens. Following the safe recovery of the missing child, Officer Krug expressed, “Thank you for you help! Great job. The kid was found at a friend’s house.”

Willowbrook, IL (Dupage County) – On April 5, 2007 the Dupage County Sheriff’s Office contacted A Child Is Missing for assistance with a missing 12-year-old boy. The ACIM Technician obtained all vital information from Deputy Delelio and within minutes over 900 phones, were ringing in the neighborhood. Wheaton, IL (Dupage County) – March 3, 2007, the Wheaton Police Department called A Child Is Missing for assistance with missing 78-year-old elderly man. Officer Craig provided the ACIM technician with a detailed description of the missing man. Over 4100 phones in the area began ringing with in minutes. The Wheaton Police Department received 50+ phone calls that resulted in the safe recovery of the elderly man. Officer Craig stated, “While driving … a resident who received a call observed the subject and called 911 while following. The subject was … returned to his family. The family was very grateful.”

Missing Child - Recovered: Thursday, November 30, 2006

Story:

Leroy, IL – On Thursday evening, November 30, 2006, 2 children, ages 12 and 9, were reported missing from their home in Leroy, IL. The Leroy Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing with information regarding the missing children including a description of the children and last known whereabouts. Within minutes of receiving the pertinent information, A Child is Missing placed hundreds of calls in the vicinity of the children's last known location, asking for citizens to be aware that these children are missing and to check their property for them. Several calls aided the Leroy Police Department in locating the missing children. A friend of the 12-year-old told Leroy Police about a conversion the two of them had. The friend told Leroy Police that the 12 year old said he was going to runaway to a barn outside of town. Officer Nathan Williams was quoted as saying “Your program worked great. We received phone calls of citizens wanting to help with the search as well as others giving information of where to look.”

Story:

Galena, IL (Jo Daviess County) – On Thursday, June 1, 2006, a 57 year old mentally disabled man went missing in Galena, Illinois. After searching for the man all night, police called A Child Is Missing for assistance the next morning. Three of the calls generated by the public as a result of the A Child Is Missing alert calls put the missing man in an area completely removed from where police had been searching. Detective Lori Huntington said, “we were able to successfully locate him in that area where he had spent the night out in the elements. Due to his mental and physical condition at the time we located him, I don’t believe he would have survived another night in the cold… The only way we were able to locate him was because of the leads we received from the phone calls you were able to send out for us.”

Missing Child - Recovered: Sunday, July 31, 2005

Story:

Lisle, IL (Dupage County) – On July 31, 2005, an autistic 5-year-old boy was found wandering out by himself in Lisle (Dupage County) Illinois. The boy was unable to speak or give any personal information about his circumstances. After evaluating the situation, Officer Sean McKay of the Lisle Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a full description of the boy to be distributed via telephone in order to search for a guardian or parent. A Child Is Missing placed 1945 alert calls over the area where the child found. Lisle PD received between 20 and 40 responses from residents, including the boy’s father who came in and recovered the child. As a result of the alert, he was returned home within 15 minutes of the alert calls being sent out.
