Newton, Kansas (Harvey County) Police Department Tuesday, June 8, 2010: When two 12 year old girls ran away together and hadn’t been seen for nearly a day, Detective Powell activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist his agency in their search. More than 5,000 alert calls were placed to the 1100 Block of Boyd Avenue, where the girls had last been seen. In response, Police received several calls from concerned residents. “Due to the calls we received, the runaway girls knew that numerous people were looking for them and called their mothers to pick them up,” said Detective Powell, “Due to them running away, it did not fit the criteria for an Amber Alert. Nice Job.”

Salina, Kansas (Saline County) Police Department May 25, 2010. When the Salina Police Department received word that a 70 year old Alzheimer’s sufferer wandered off earlier that morning, they wasted no time in activating the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. Within 28 minutes of activation, 6 calls were received, one of them with a report of having just seen the woman. When officers moved into the area, she was found safe, walking down the street two blocks from where she was reported to have been spotted. Total time from activation to safe recovery: 28 minutes, thus preserving law enforcement time and resources.

Ottawa County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office “Citizens that received [alert] calls came out to assist in looking for the missing child and aided in the safe recovery of the child,” said Ottawa County, Kansas Sheriff Keith Coleman after his agency located a four year old boy who had gone missing. The boy had last been seen at 10:00am on September 15, 2009 in the 400 block of Strickler Avenue in Delphos, Kansas and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office quickly called A Child Is Missing. With approximately 500 alert calls quickly sent to the area surrounding where the child had last been seen, he was located at 11:55am.

Basehor, Kansas (Leavenworth County) Police Department When Basehor, Kansas Police activated A Child Is Missing to assist their search for an eight year old girl on September 5, 2009, activating Basehor Police Officer Frank Pflumm said, “this program has been greeted with public enthusiasm and is a crucial resource for law enforcement.” “Thanks to ACIM [A Child Is Missing], residents from nearby cities responded to assist the search,” Pflumm said. The girl was located safely as a result of the alert calls approximately ½ mile from where she had gone missing.

Harvey County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office Two brothers, one seven and the other 12, went missing in North Newton Kansas and the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office was notified. They had gone missing on August 4, 2009 from the 100 block of West 26th Street in North Newton and Sheriff T. Walton called A Child Is Missing himself and activated the Alert Program. This resulted in the mapping of the area surrounding the West 26th Street location and more than 1,500 alert calls being placed to the homes and businesses there. According to the Sheriff, 10 calls from the community with information were prompted by the alert calls. One of the callers indicated he had seen the children several hours earlier at a specific location. When Sheriff’s personnel checked, they were successful in finding the boys approximately ½ mile from there.

When two brothers, one five years old and the other nine, went missing from the 200 block of Center Street in Goodland, Kansas on the afternoon of February 16, 2009, The Sherman County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office called A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program to assist in the search. After nearly 3,500 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the boys had last been seen, the Sheriff’s Office received four calls from the public with information. That information led Deputies to the boys who were ultimately located safe approximately three hours later.

A 10 year old boy went missing from the 4200 block of Hydraulic Street in Wichita, Kansas on the night of Sunday, September 7, 2008. Wichita Police Officer Toman called the A Child Is Missing Alert Program and more than 2,600 alert calls were launched in the area surrounding where the child was last seen. After approximately 50 calls to Wichita Police resulting from the alert calls, the boy was located at 2:30am the next day playing video games at a 24 hour department store approximately eight miles from his home.

On March 6, 2009, the Ottawa, Kansas Police Department was searching for a 3 year old girl who had gone missing from the 1000 block of 17th Street in Ottawa, Kansas. Ottawa Police called A Child Is Missing shortly after and activated the Alert Program. After more than 1,500 alert calls were launched, approximately 10 calls from the public were received by Police providing information. This led to the safe recovery of the girl.

Andover, KS (Butler County) - After A Child Is Missing launched 425 alert calls, Andover, Kansas Police received five calls from alert residents providing information to them about a missing boy. A woman had been driving home on the afternoon of May 30, 2006 and saw the boy not realizing he was missing. When she arrived home, her answering machine had captured the A Child Is Missing alert message which described the boy she had just seen. She called police who quickly located the child in the vicinity of the intersection of Highways 54 and 96.

Olathe, KS - On May 5, 2006, a thirteen-year-old girl was reported as having run away from her school bus stop in Olathe (Johnson County), KS. A Child Is Missing was contacted by Deputy Gray of the Johnson County SO, who reported a full description of the missing girl to be broadcast to the community in the hope that a neighbor might have information leading to the recovery of the missing girl. A Child Is Missing alerted over 1600 homes and businesses in the region surrounding area of where the girl was last seen. Johnson County SO received one call from a particular resident that provided a direction of travel and updated location of the child. As a result, officers then quickly recovered the child in good condition, and on foot several miles from her initial runaway location.
